Just noted today that my trustworthy Asus external Blu-Ray/DVD external drive (model sbc-06d2x-u) didn't work after upgrading from Windows 10 v1607 to Windows 10 v1709.
Turned out that Windows 10 v1709 did not like the old Initio default controller driver.
The Fix
Fixing driver issues after Windows 10 upgrades are often quite easy, and so was this one:
1. Uninstall the device (in this case the Initio Default Controller), and make sure to select the option to delete the existing driver
2. Unplug the device, and plug it back in. New device found 🙂

Now the computer is able to find the device, but still is unable to read from the disc. I will keep looking.
Thanks, my machine was able to use the drive just fine with the Microsoft driver, but there could be other factors like firmware version of the device etc.
It could be firmware, but I took it to my hardware technician, and he said that, the lens had gone bad and needed to be replaced. It seems it is really a hardware issue.
